The latest news ‘help is on the way from Humana for the chronically ill’ may sound like great news, but is it? Remember that old saying Just because it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck doesn’t guarantee it’s always a duck! Bear in mind”Humana is a for-profit healthcare business. This new care management program is an outgrowth of coordination between Humana and Pfizer—if that didn’t raise a red flag yet—Pfizer is a pharmaceutical company whose profit comes from how many of their medications are being prescribed by physicians. In case you missed two more red flags—Humana admits deciding to launch a new ‘healthcare management plan’ in the Tampa Bay area is based on its large number of Medicare population. This is the same healthcare plan which was only offered to Medicare Advantage members but suddenly is being offered to Medicare/Medicaid duel enrollment members! According to Humana, the fact that for-profit healthcare management can limit physician order coverage and control which chronic conditions are eligible for coverage from the standpoint of patient benefit can, in the long run, only spell improvement for the current medical costs and healthcare insurance issues currently being debated between President Obama and Congress!

Florida is many things to many people. It is known for being a golf destination for retirees looking for warm weather and cheap buffets. It is a vacation home for the millions of northern snowbirds who take up residence under the palm trees in the winter. It is the mythical home of alligator wrestlers and eco-terrorists. However, what Florida is not known for is its technological savvy and cutting “edge attitude. That has all begun to change. Tampa, Florida currently has a thriving independent film scene. Tampa also hosted the Internet technology summit this past August. All in all, Florida is improving its image as a technological hotbed.

The Internet movers and shakers converged on sunny Tampa this past August to discuss all things Web related. New marketing tools, devices, and strategies were showcased and discussed. The Internet technology summit is the arena where new trends are mapped and new technologies are launched. Over 500 leaders in technology and business were on hand in Tampa to present and discuss their ideas. For Tampa, Florida to host this type of important and large-scale event is an honor. New York, Las Vegas, or Silicon Valley are the typical locations for such summits.

Sinkhole legislation may or may not do anything to improve the sagging home market. Sinkholes can cause many problems for a home owner. Sinkhole legislatoin may often requires homeowners in sinkhole prone areas to pay thousands of extra dollars per year. Homeowners can choose whether they want to buy sinkhole insurance or not. It is a good investment for people who live in sinkhole prone areas. A homeowner wastes his money if he buys sinkhole insurance on a home that does not need it.

Governmental legislation can affect economic activity. The one thing legislation does not normally do is raise it. It limits economic activity or stops it completely in some cases. If people still want the product, it often moves into an underground market. Sinkhole legislation will not raise house sales, particularly if the legislation becomes more restrictive. The legislation may protect homeowners, but it will also raise the cost of building.

Reducing the existing legislation or at least relaxing restrictions may serve to increase the number of new homes that get built. It will not matter too much if they are relaxed only slightly. Such laws are often put in place to protect individuals. It’s not a good idea to relax them too much.Still bored?

The Tampa area is currently bracing for what may be a slower-than-normal tourist season because of the considerably high gas prices. While gas prices will not stop everyone from enjoying this great tourist destination, it will hinder many.

The Tampa area has much to offer in forms of entertainment and summer fun. Tourists and locals alike will flock to the beach and enjoy the warm Gulf water. Others will come to enjoy the amusement parks and cultural attractions. Gas prices may inhibit travelers from out-of-state, but Florida residents will still flock to this ever-popular area.

High gas prices may slow the amount of visitors to the area that arrive by plane. Many people simply do not like the increasing ticket prices, combined with the many new regulations that airlines are imposing on their customers. Air travel will be lower everywhere this year.

However, visitors coming in from the Central Florida/Orlando area are sure to remain at an all time high. Tampa is a short drive from the Orlando theme parks, and many visitors enjoy the scenic drive from Orlando to Tampa. In the long run, if gas prices remain high, tourism will drop. This, however, is not necessarily bad. Locals, will also be traveling less, making it more appealing to enjoy the wonderful attractions right in their own back yard.

Climate change is not only a possibility, but it is our current reality. The change in our climate is directly affecting our oceans which make up 75 of our planet. Human activities have increased the uptake of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere thereby increasing the acidity of the ocean. The increase of acidity in our oceans affects the growth and reproduction rates of fish, reduces the calcium carbonate in the water which some marine life rely on to produce their hard skeletons, and ultimately leads to less diversity of aquatic life.

So what does this mean for Tampa’s beaches? Since Tampa Bay serves as a perfect refuge for crustaceans, the increase in acidity will be intolerable for these creatures. Some scientists predict that within 50 years, these marine animals will simply become extinct. Residents and tourists alike will no longer be able to stroll up and down the beautiful shoreline of Tampa to collect shells because they will have disintegrated. If these crustaceans cease to exist, the entire food web becomes weaker causing ripples up the food chain which will cause the extinction of all marine life, directly affecting the way of life in Tampa. To reverse this process and ensure the marine life species and our own, we must begin to fix our mistakes by reducing our carbon dioxide emissions which will ensure that the acidity of our oceans does not reach this critical level.

The recession of the past few years has hit housing markets across the United States particularly hard. Losses in value of up to fifty percent, mortgage holders finding themselves upside down in mortgages, paying more for their homes than their estimated worth, and the drastic loss of new home buyers has led to low prices and few sales. In areas reliant upon service economies, such as the Tampa Bay community, these effects have been drastic. Long a destination for first time home buyers, families looking to upgrade their living conditions and retirees alike, the massive growth in unemployment in the area has hindered home buyers and home sellers alike.

Anticipated employment growth in the Tampa Bay area, though, has excitement brewing amongst Tampa’s housing market professionals and buyers alike. Opportunities to grow for businesses seeking locations from which they can operate without the added burden of high state income taxes abound, and many are recognizing Florida for the rich opportunities it presents. The Tampa Bay area, in particular, offers much that businesses and employers want from a community: no state income taxes, year-round beautiful weather, gorgeous beaches, abundant outdoor recreation, exotic wildlife and best of all, low prices on new and older homes in every price bracket, in every neighborhood and nook of our beloved Tampa Bay area.
